Being an editor can be difficult (especially when you have writer lives in you). However, I have some advice for those of you who have to deal with Big Blue Meanies! But first, let me tell you how it all occurred before we go to Advice part of this little piece.
I moved to the western slope of the Sierra Nevada (the beginning of the California gold country) and somehow wrangled my way in the local newspaper staff. (in my formative years I never took English classes past the 7th grade. Or the newspaper or yearbook staff, I cut my teeth on a typewriter ). Earlier in the marketing and advertising I did not could not find a decent job paying in the mountains. Journalistic work, I knew I could do so I started as a typesetter, which means that the typed papers and titles, and we are not talking about using the computers here. It is more than 20 years.
How things are going in the local weekly newspaper - the only true bastion of pure and free journalism left in this country - I was on assignment the first week, the camera tow.Izdavač and I left in his banged up Chevy Blazer crossed the Merced River Gorge on two wheels, and headed into the heart of gold country in which I was to report new gold discovery.
within six months I was editor in chief of California's oldest continuously published weekly, Mariposa Gazette and Miner and tabloid customer balance 'N Oak i feel like I finally found a job made in heaven. To this day, which was the best job I ever had. When the ink gets under your skin, you're addicted for sure - there is no cure
.a large part of the job is not just writing (I've done a lot and loved all his life), it is all the other things that would work. Working in a dark room, develop the pictures, making big and small cameras, lay out newspapers, handle subscriptions, edit, write, report and letters - all of
.I think my favorite part is the people interviewing (techniques I refused to let go, even today). Being a woman and a journalist makes me incredibly curious - period. Work on the magazine is one place where you get to learn all the publishing business from start to finish. I cherish those moments forever. I highly recommend finding a job at a small weekly newspaper. You get paid pennies, but experience is worth a million dollars!
a matter of personal style
Edit itself is a matter of personal style, except of course for - hm - spelling, grammar and usage. Stil, it's one thing. Errors in grammar, usage and spelling of department - it's a whole 'nother bananas - which are likely to slip on if you do not pay attention to
This will be editor off faster than you can say journalism! This will make him or her drop your piece like a hot potato.
editor, shameless creature that he or she is thinking like this: What the hell is this crap? If you do not take the time to check these things - what are you a writer I'm not talking about words that make or use colloquialisms?. Metaphors and analogies - these things are all great -. In its right place
But grammar and spelling - C'mon people - these are basic. I'm not saying I made these mistakes - we all have - but it's hard on your readers
.all stumble sentence you read? Go back and re-read it. Are there parts missing? With the advent of computers, we need to take to the editing screen.
a big mistake!
Print out the document - and here's a tip for proofreading - reading backwards. Start at the end and read each word backwards. You'll catch more than a few mistakes.
Today, with computers and tools (this option to Microsoft Word toolbar), grammar and spelling issues should virtually disappear. Bottom line is - if you have not taken enough time to grammar and usage rights or the correct written word - that is to say their facts are accurate? You have lost credibility with the first misspelled word or poor grammar.
My problem is that it is difficult for me to proofread what I wrote. What should I do? Walk away from it. Let it sit. Give it to someone else. Whatever you do - find something that works for you. Make it work! It was worth the wait.
Do not be so eager to get on-line with this stuff. Remember when you are writing on-line usually have you own editor, except for one thing - all readers to become editors to repeat to himself.! All readers become editors
Understand what you write. Never call an opinion piece of news. Or have a hard news piece. You'll look like a fool.
Here are a few clues to distinguish between various types of articles that may appear in newspapers, ezine, or online.
News should contain the sacred who, what, where, when, why and how! (Actually any piece should have this element). It does not matter if your verbiage is creative - your facts simply can not be
.ever heard of slander? I have been sued for it (of course I knew - I had the facts in the series - except that it is a frivolous lawsuit anyway - was the tip against my series of articles on local hot topics). Stick to the facts. Transfer all the stories, wherever possible.
I can not express an opinion piece in the news. It is verboten! Although, of course, at any time, turn on the TV and what do you have? Opinion, not news! But then again, we know that these people are not real journalists. Most of them are just actors. Someone else wrote their copy. (This is the opinion here ).
Featured articles are soft pieces will probably be found in the lifestyle sections of its newspaper, magazine, or ezine. They are usually written about someone or something of interest to the community. The artist road, which is used for the background color for Disney - or the old Miner working last gold Sweetwater Mine . These pieces are more about people than events.
Sport articles are far away, in my opinion, of course, the hardest to write. Do not have a lot of latitude with and he won 6 points after the end of the line run. The crowd went wild!
Columns (or more prevalent forums) tend toward a more essay-op-ed pieces (opinion-editorial). Columns and Blogs are a great place to break out. Erma Bombeck was one such columnist.
In article are not really news, not really feature. They are in a class all by itself. Generally, in order for the parts I put in the buyer because they are usually directed at something around the house. How to fix the furnace, in order to build a garden shed, etc. You will find these along with cartoons, crossword puzzles and all that fun stuff.
creative writing is what he says. This is writing that is creative. Not a lot of definitions needed here.
fi is generally not found in newspapers or newsletters, unless it is seasonal and if prolonged, could start in a row. The genres here are too numerous to mention.
publishing , we have come full circle. Journalism is generally based on fact, unless you are Truman Capote, and then it reads like a story. cold is a fact-based, but it requires a lot of creating dialogue that he really was not a party. cold created a whole new genre of non-fiction writing. But you should know by now that if you saw Capote .
If you're a real writer, then you keep on your side (as you remember), this simple book, kind of the Bible, grammar and usage errors. This is called The elements of style written by William Strunk Jr., EB White, and Charles Osgood. This is a very inexpensive book. You can log on to Amazon and pick it up for a song.
to address all those harrowing questions. His or is it? Lay or lie? Affect or effect? Compliment or Complement? He and I and him and me? Consent or climb.
This May seem like a small thing - but as a writer - you, of all people, should know the difference. Most editors do not!
If your writing is strong and clean (less is more!) And you take care of their grammar, spelling and usage questions -. Before long you'll find people clamoring for more
